I run James Hayes Consulting from Herne Bay in Kent. I help small businesses put AI to work on their real jobs, and I give one-to-one AI lessons to anyone who wants to get more out of it, in their own home or by video.

What I do, and why

I build software for my own businesses, and AI tools are part of that work every day. Over the last couple of years I've watched them go from a curiosity to something that can draft a quote, answer a customer, summarise a meeting or explain a letter in seconds.

Most people and most small firms haven't had the chance to learn what these tools can do, which ones are safe, and which are a waste of money. Meanwhile the same technology is being used by criminals to clone voices and write convincing scam messages. I started James Hayes Consulting's AI work so that local people and businesses get the good out of AI and are protected from the bad.

So I do two things. For businesses, I find the jobs AI can safely take on, set it up on your own work, and train your team (AI for your business). For individuals, I teach one-to-one, on your own phone, tablet or computer (AI lessons at home).

How I work

  • Plain EnglishNo jargon. If I use a technical word, I explain it, and there's a jargon buster on this site for the rest.
  • Your own devices and softwareLessons happen on your phone or computer. Business work uses the software you already pay for wherever it can.
  • Prices agreed firstFixed prices are on the prices page. Anything else is quoted in writing before you commit.
  • Honest adviceIf something isn't worth paying for, or you can do it yourself with a free guide, I'll tell you.
  • Safety firstCustomer data stays out of tools that aren't safe for it, and every business I work with gets written rules for staff.
  • Evenings and weekendsBy arrangement, for people who work during the day.

My promise for home lessons

  • I will never ask for your passwords, PIN or bank detailsYou type your own passwords, and I never touch online banking.
  • Family and friends are always welcomeSit in on the visit or join the phone chat beforehand.
  • No pressureI never ask you to decide anything on the day.
  • Nothing to pay before your visitPay by card on the day, or by bank transfer afterwards. No deposits and no contracts.

I write free, plain-English guides on using AI safely, and I publish research on how AI is changing scams in the UK, including what Britain really knows about AI and a study of how UK scam advice is adapting. They're all on the free guides page, along with a jargon buster.

I also give free talks to clubs and community groups about AI and the new scams.
