AI for private schools in Nigeria: the office, not the classroom
AI for private schools in Nigeria works well in the school office: answering admissions enquiries, booking entrance exams, sending term fee reminders and handling the same parent questions every September. We set it up for nursery, primary and secondary schools in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. It talks to parents and staff only, not to pupils.

Where the school office's time goes
Admissions
The enquiry season
Parents ask about fees, available places, the curriculum, the school bus and the entrance exam date, usually on WhatsApp and often in the evening.
Fees
Term fee schedules and reminders
Tuition, levies, uniforms and books, instalment arrangements, and the reminders before and after resumption.
Parents
The same ten questions
Resumption dates, mid-term break, uniform suppliers, transport routes, closing time on Fridays, what to bring on the first day.
Staff
Handbooks, newsletters and lesson plans
The termly newsletter, a staff handbook nobody has updated since 2021, and lesson-plan first drafts for a teacher to rework.
Safeguarding first: the AI does not chat with pupils
Everything we set up for a school is for parents, guardians and staff. The assistant does not take messages from children, does not give homework help and does not hold pupils' records beyond what the office already sends parents. If a message looks like it comes from a child, or mentions a safeguarding concern, it goes straight to a named member of staff and the assistant stops replying. Lagos requires private schools to comply with the Lagos State School Safety Initiative, and your safeguarding lead should approve the handover rules before launch.
Children's data and school rules in Nigeria
Children's data under the NDPA. Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 anyone under 18 is a child. Where consent is the basis for processing, it must come from a parent or legal guardian, and schools are expected to verify it; the Act also recognises processing for education by professionals with a duty of confidentiality (ALN Nigeria, 2023). In practice an admissions assistant collects the parent's details and the child's name, age and class sought, and nothing more until the school's own admission form.
Lagos approval. The Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) approves private schools against the State Guidelines. In February 2026 it approved a first batch of 76 schools and said it would run approval exercises every quarter (Radio Nigeria Lagos, February 2026). An assistant should give your approval status only in words your management has signed off.
The Lagos calendar. The state approved one 2026/2027 calendar for public and private schools: first term from 14 September to 18 December 2026, with schools on international curricula asked to apply for different dates by 21 August 2026 (Nairametrics, July 2026). Those dates go into the assistant's answers once and drive the reminder schedule. Schools in Abuja and Rivers should check their own state or FCT authority's calendar and rules. Not legal advice.
Getting started. Staff assistants are built as custom AI assistants on your own documents, and our staff AI training for Nigeria covers the do's and don'ts for teachers. Our own WhatsApp agent, the JHC Sector Agent (enquiry edition), is in build with no price or date yet; you can join the early list. The Nigeria overview explains how to pay from Nigeria.
School admissions on WhatsApp: one enquiry, start to finish
-
Tuesday, 8.45pm
Mr Bello, moving his family from Kano to Lekki, messages your admissions number: does the school have space in Primary 4 for January, and what are the fees? -
Answers from your own documents
The assistant sends the Primary 4 fee schedule, explains the instalment option you offer, and says spaces are confirmed by the admissions officer. -
Entrance assessment booked
It offers two Saturday assessment slots from your calendar, and Mr Bello picks one. It asks only for his name, phone, his daughter's name, age and current class. -
What to bring
It sends your list: last report card, birth certificate and a passport photograph, and the assessment fee details as your school sets them. -
Wednesday morning
Your admissions officer finds a summary in the enquiries sheet, calls Mr Bello to welcome him and answers a question about the school bus route from Ajah. -
After the assessment
The result and any offer come from the head teacher's office, by letter or call. The assistant only sends the reminder about the acceptance deadline you set.
School fees reminder automation across a term
Drafted from your fee schedule and the state calendar, approved once by the bursar, then sent to parents who agreed to WhatsApp updates.
| When | Message to parents | Who handles replies |
|---|---|---|
| Three weeks before resumption | Next term's fees by class, payment options, the payment link or account details, and the deadline | Assistant answers questions from the fee schedule |
| First week of term | Reminder to parents not yet marked paid in the bursar's sheet | Bursar checks the bank or gateway before any message says 'paid' |
| Parent writes about hardship | Not answered by AI | Bursar or head teacher, in confidence |
Paystack lists a lower rate for educational institutions in Nigeria: 0.7% capped at ₦1,500 on local cards and ₦300 on other methods (checked October 2026). Ask Paystack whether your school qualifies.
AI for school administration in Nigeria: staff tools
- A staff assistant on your own handbookTeachers ask 'what is the policy on late pick-up?' and get the answer from your handbook, with the page to check.
- Lesson-plan first draftsA draft plan against the scheme of work, which the teacher reworks and owns. AI gets facts wrong, so nothing goes to a class unchecked.
- Staff trainingA short briefing on what may and may not go into AI tools, especially pupils' names, reports and medical notes.
What it costs

Questions people ask
Is it legal to use AI with pupils' data in Nigeria?
The NDPA does not ban it, but children's data needs particular care, including a parent's consent where consent is the basis. We keep pupils' records out of AI tools and in the school's own systems.
Can an AI chatbot talk to our students?
Not in anything we build. Our assistants talk to parents and staff only, and pass anything that looks like it comes from a child to a named member of staff.
Can it send school fee reminders on WhatsApp?
Yes, to parents who agreed to WhatsApp updates, using templates your bursar approved. Whether a family has paid is confirmed by a person from the bank or gateway records.
Can AI mark entrance exams?
We don't set that up. Admission decisions affect children, so teachers mark and the head decides; the assistant only books the slot and sends reminders.
We are a school in Abuja. Does this apply to us?
Yes. The NDPA applies across Nigeria; calendar and approval rules come from the FCT authorities rather than Lagos, and we build those into the answers.
How much does AI for a private school cost?
The Kick-Start is £395 (about $520) by video, and staff assistants are £495 (about $660). Larger builds are quoted in writing first.
