AI for SACCOs and microfinance in Kenya
A busy SACCO answers the same questions hundreds of times a month: what's my loan balance, when are dividends paid, can I stand guarantor for my cousin. We build AI assistants that draft those answers from your own by-laws and loan policy, for staff first and members after. The credit decision stays with people.
From £495 (about $660)
Based in the UK, working by video with businesses in Kenya. Nairobi is two or three hours ahead of the UK.
A sector of 7.87 million members
SASRA's latest supervision report counts 7.87 million members in regulated SACCOs in 2025, up from 7.39 million (Capital FM, September 2026). Deposits grew 11.12% to KES 832.74 billion and assets reached about KES 1.21 trillion (same report).
Membership grows faster than member service teams, and the software houses have noticed. Craft Silicon unveiled a voice assistant, Small Talk, at the 2025 SACCO Summit for balance and savings questions in English or local languages, then in pilot with selected institutions (Capital FM, July 2025). You needn't wait for your vendor. Most of the gain comes from organising your own rules so a machine can find them.
Jobs an assistant can draft
- Loan eligibility in plain words"How much can I borrow on KES 120,000 of deposits?" It quotes the multiplier from your loan policy and says a loans officer confirms the figure.
- Guarantor questionsWhat standing guarantor means, how much of your deposits are tied up, how to be released. From your by-laws, in English and Swahili.
- Dividend and interest datesOnce the AGM sets the rate, one approved answer goes to everyone who asks.
- Application checklistsThe payslips and forms each product needs, sent before the member travels to the branch.
- AGM and delegate noticesDraft notices, agendas and minutes from the secretary's notes, checked by the board.
- A staff assistant on policyNew staff ask it where the policy says what, with the clause quoted, instead of interrupting the credit manager.
One enquiry, from first message to handover
-
8.40pm: a member writes
"Habari, nataka kujua balance ya loan yangu na kama naweza top up." She wants her loan balance and to know if she can top up. -
Identity first
No balances to an unverified number. The assistant asks for her member number and checks the phone matches your records, or points her to your member portal or USSD service. -
The rules, not a guess
It explains your top-up rule from the loan policy and lists the documents a top-up needs. -
A payment link where it helps
If she wants to clear arrears first, it sends your M-Pesa paybill and account format, or an STK push prompt if your system supports one. -
Handover
It tells her a loans officer will reply in the morning and writes a two-line summary into your CRM or a shared sheet. -
A person decides
The officer reviews the case. The chat is logged, so the board can see what members ask about.
SASRA, the ODPC and the rules around credit
SASRA licenses and supervises deposit-taking SACCOs and the larger non-withdrawable deposit-taking ones. The board answers for what the SACCO tells members, whoever drafted it, so check any member-facing tool with your compliance officer first.
Data protection. Financial services must register with the ODPC regardless of size. Balances, payslips and guarantor details are personal data under the Data Protection Act 2019, and a guarantor's details belong to the guarantor, so the assistant mustn't reveal one member's exposure to another.
Automated decisions. Section 35 gives members a right not to be subject to a significant decision based solely on automated processing. Our builds don't approve, refuse or price loans. If you lend through an app, read the ODPC's separate guidance note for digital credit providers.
Remote access. The ODPC's September 2026 cross-border guidance treats access from outside Kenya as a transfer, so we agree in writing what we can see from the UK and use test data wherever possible.
Where it connects
M-Pesa
Safaricom's Daraja API offers M-Pesa Express (the STK push) and paybill confirmations. An automation can send the prompt or match a payment to a member number; your system does the posting.
Your core banking system
We don't replace it. Where it has an API or a daily export, the assistant reads from that, not from a copy pasted into a chat tool.
WhatsApp Business
Meta allows businesses to use AI with their own customers and charges per template message; Kenya falls in its "Rest of Africa" rate band (checked October 2026).
Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace
Often the safest first step: a staff assistant inside tools you already pay for.
Custom assistantsWhat it costs
Invoiced in pounds sterling, paid by international bank transfer within 7 days. Dollar figures are a guide. VAT on imported services is a question for your accountant.
The member-facing WhatsApp agent is in build
Our JHC Sector Agent (Enquiry edition) is being built to run on a SACCO's own WhatsApp number, answer from approved rules, send payment links and hand over to staff. No price or launch date yet; the early list hears first. See also our Kenya overview and microfinance in Ghana.
Questions people ask
Can a WhatsApp chatbot tell SACCO members their loan balance?
Yes, if it reads from your core system and verifies the member first. Many SACCOs start a step back: the bot explains rules and sends members to the portal or USSD for live balances.
Can AI approve SACCO loans?
We won't build that. Section 35 of the Data Protection Act protects members from significant decisions made solely by automated processing, and your credit committee answers for every loan.
Does a SACCO need to register with the ODPC?
Yes, financial services register whatever their size. For a micro or small controller the fee is KES 4,000, renewed every two years for KES 2,000, under the 2021 regulations.
How much does a SACCO chatbot cost?
Staff assistants are £495 (about $660). A member-facing automation is quoted after a free call, usually from £395 (about $520), plus WhatsApp and AI fees paid to the providers.
