AI for lenders, insurers and brokers in Nigeria
Nigeria's big insurers already answer customers with AI on WhatsApp. Licensed digital lenders, microfinance banks, brokers and microinsurers can get similar help without a tech team: assistants that answer from your product rules, take a claim's first details and draft reminders within the FCCPC rules. People still decide every loan and claim.

Based in the UK, working by video with businesses in Nigeria. Lagos is on UK time in winter and one hour ahead in summer.
The large firms have moved. The mid tier hasn't, yet
AIICO put an AI service called ELLA on WhatsApp in August 2021 for buying and renewing policies and reporting claims (Prime Business Africa, 2021). In May 2026 Heirs Insurance launched Prince AI, which works in English, Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa among other languages and lets customers start and track claims on WhatsApp (TechAfrica News, May 2026).
The money is moving too. Insurance grew 20.78% in real terms in Q3 2025, and NAICOM said on 3 August 2026 that 43 insurers and reinsurers had met the new capital rules under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025 (NAN, August 2026).
A broker with eight staff cannot build its own model. It can give staff an assistant that knows every product sheet, and answer routine questions in minutes instead of the next morning.
Which rules apply to your firm
A short map, not legal advice. Your compliance officer or lawyer has the final word.
| Type of firm | Main rules | What it means for an assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Digital lender or loan app | FCCPC Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional (DEON) Consumer Lending Regulations 2025 | Reminders go to the borrower only, not to their contacts; loan terms are stated clearly; marketing has an easy opt-out |
| Microfinance bank | Central Bank of Nigeria licensing and consumer protection rules | Answers come from approved product sheets; account questions go to verified staff channels |
| Insurer, broker or microinsurer | NAICOM supervision under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025 | The assistant takes claim details and explains the process; it does not accept or refuse a claim |
| All of the above | Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, section 37 on automated decisions | No credit or claims decision made by the system alone; a named person decides |
Rules checked October 2026.
Digital lending: the FCCPC rules are being enforced
The FCCPC issued the DEON Consumer Lending Regulations in 2025 to tackle abusive recovery, harassment and data privacy violations. Penalties reach ₦100 million or 1% of turnover, and directors can be disqualified for up to five years (FCCPC, September 2025). Enforcement paused after a court order in April 2026 and resumed on 20 July 2026, when the Federal High Court in Lagos dismissed the challenge (FCCPC, July 2026).
For AI, that means reminders are factual and go to the borrower alone, and any tool that messages borrowers is treated as part of your documented recovery process. Complaints need a fast route too: one law firm's summary says they must be addressed within 24 hours (Mondaq), so an assistant that logs a complaint and alerts a person at once earns its place.
We are not lawyers. We build to your compliance officer's reading of the rules and write it into your AI policy.
Repayment reminders the rules can live with
Drafted from your loan records; your team approves the templates once.
| When | What the message says | Why it is written that way |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days before due | Amount, due date, how to pay, and a number to call if there is a problem | Plain facts, sent to the borrower only |
| On the due day | A short reminder with the payment link or account details | No threat, no mention of penalties beyond the agreed terms |
| 2 days late | Asks whether they need to talk about a new date, with a direct line to a named team | Opens a conversation instead of escalating |
| Borrower replies 'I lost my job' | Not answered by AI: passed straight to a person | Hardship is a human decision |
Worked example: a motor claim on WhatsApp
-
Monday, 7.15am
Emeka, a client of a Lagos broker, messages: his car was hit at a junction in Surulere. The assistant replies with the claims checklist from the broker's own guide. -
First notice of claim
Policy number, date, place, what happened, photos, one question at a time. No bank details in the chat. -
Logged and summarised
The details become one row in the claims sheet, photos saved to the claim folder, with a two-line summary. -
The question it won't answer
'Will they pay?' The assistant says the insurer's claims team decides, and gives the usual next steps from the guide. -
Handed to a person
By 9am a named claims handler has the summary, calls Emeka, and passes the file to the insurer. -
Updates without chasing
When the handler updates the status, the assistant drafts a progress message for the handler to send.
What it costs
Prices in pounds, invoiced and paid by international bank transfer within 7 days. Dollar figures are a guide.
Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo
Customers write the way they speak, and AI handles Nigerian Pidgin and the main languages unevenly. We test on real messages your staff supply, and speakers on your team check the replies before launch. Our own WhatsApp agent, the JHC Sector Agent (enquiry edition), is in build, with no price or date yet. See the Nigeria overview and custom AI assistants.
Questions people ask
How much does AI customer service cost for a digital lender in Nigeria?
Staff assistants built on your product rules are £495 (about $660). A quoted automation, such as reminder drafts or complaint logging, usually starts from £395 (about $520).
Can AI send loan repayment reminders on WhatsApp in Nigeria?
It can draft them from your records, using templates your team approved. They should be factual and go to the borrower only; hardship and complaints go to a person.
Can an AI chatbot approve loans or insurance claims?
Not in anything we build. The NDPA restricts decisions made solely by automated means with significant effects, and credit and claims decisions belong with named staff.
Does a WhatsApp assistant work in Pidgin?
It can, but quality varies. We test it on real customer messages and have your staff check the replies before launch.
Can a UK firm build this for a Nigerian lender?
Yes, by video, inside your own Google or Microsoft and WhatsApp Business accounts, so customer data stays in your systems.
