WhatsApp chatbot cost in Kenya: what you will really pay in 2026

A WhatsApp chatbot in Kenya usually costs KES 15,000 to KES 80,000 to build, depending mostly on whether it takes M-Pesa payments, with larger systems running to KES 200,000. Then come monthly costs: hosting, maintenance and Meta's per-message fees for the messages it charges for. This page breaks each part down so you can compare quotes properly.

What you get at each price

Build bands below come from one Nairobi developer's published price guide, updated July 2026. Treat them as a guide to the market, not a quote.

Budget What you usually get What is usually missing
KES 0 (WhatsApp Business app) Greeting and away messages, quick replies, labels and a product catalogue on one phone No AI, no integrations, one or two people answering by hand
KES 15,000 to 30,000 A basic FAQ bot: menus, opening hours, prices and a few fixed answers M-Pesa, a CRM link and any real understanding of free-text questions
KES 40,000 to 80,000 An ordering bot that sends an M-Pesa prompt and confirms payment Handover to staff, reporting and someone looking after it next year
KES 80,000 to 200,000 Ordering, payments, delivery tracking and an admin dashboard Often fine, but check who owns the code and the WhatsApp account
KES 3,000 to 10,000 a month Maintenance and hosting for a custom bot Meta's message fees, which are billed separately
From £395 (about $520) Our quoted automation or website assistant, built in your own accounts Tool and message fees, paid by you straight to the providers

Market bands checked October 2026. One Nairobi platform also estimates all-in monthly spend of KES 15,000 to KES 80,000 for a small business handling 5,000 to 20,000 conversations.

What pushes a Kenyan chatbot quote up

  • M-Pesa Express (the STK push)Safaricom's Daraja API needs a paybill or till in your company's name, a go-live approval and a server to receive payment callbacks. Matching each payment to an order is where the hours go.
  • IntegrationsReading stock from your POS, booking into Google Calendar or writing leads into a CRM. Each connection is its own small project with its own testing.
  • Number of flowsAnswering questions is one flow. Orders, bookings, complaints and delivery updates are four more. Ask every supplier to list the flows their price covers.
  • Handover to a personA shared inbox so staff can take over mid-conversation, with the history visible, costs more than a bot that simply says "call us".

WhatsApp Business API cost in Nairobi: what Meta charges

Meta charges per delivered template message (marketing, utility and authentication), priced by the customer's country code; +254 numbers sit in its "Rest of Africa" region. Ordinary replies inside the 24-hour window after a customer's last message are free, and chats that start from a click-to-WhatsApp advert get a free 72-hour window.

In August and September 2026 Kenyan outlets, including Business Daily, reported that those replies would become chargeable from 1 October 2026. When we checked Meta's own list of pricing updates in October 2026, its 1 October changes covered rate changes in other markets and still said all non-template messages are free. Confirm the position with your provider in writing before you budget for it.

The fees apply to the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API), not the free WhatsApp Business app on a phone. We have not printed a shilling rate here; get the current figure from Meta's pricing page. To estimate your bill, count last month's template messages (reminders, receipts, offers), and ask your provider to show Meta's rate and their own charge as separate lines.

For the M-Pesa side, Safaricom documents M-Pesa Express and its other APIs on the Daraja developer portal. For the data side, the ODPC's Guidance Note on Artificial Intelligence (July 2026) sets out what it expects when a business brings in an outside AI provider.

Hidden costs and red flags when you buy

  • Your number in their accountIf the WhatsApp Business Account sits in the supplier's Meta portfolio, leaving them can mean losing the number. Insist it is registered to your own business.
  • Message fees with a hidden markupSome platforms bill messages on their own rate card. That is fine if they show you Meta's rate next to theirs.
  • "Unlimited AI replies"Someone pays for every AI answer. A flat promise usually means a cap in the small print or a cheaper model doing the work.
  • Payment without reconciliationA bot that sends an STK push but doesn't check the callback leaves staff matching M-Pesa messages by hand.
  • Nobody looking after itPrices change, staff leave, Meta updates its rules. Ask who updates the bot's answers after launch, and what that costs.

Our options, and what each one covers

AI automationQuoted. One tested workflow, such as a WhatsApp enquiry arriving, AI drafting the reply for a person to approve, and the lead logged in a sheet or CRMFrom £395 (about $520)
Website AI assistantQuoted after a free call. A customer-facing assistant on an established tool that answers from your own information and passes qualified enquiries to staff; tool costs paid to the providerFrom £495 (about $660)
AI opportunity auditFor a bigger build: interviews with up to five people and a written report within five working days, credited against a build of £2,000 or more within 60 days£995 (about $1,320)

Invoiced in pounds sterling and paid by international bank transfer within 7 days, not in shillings; dollar figures are a guide. No UK VAT is charged. Whether Kenyan VAT applies to a service bought from a UK firm is a question for your accountant.

Our own WhatsApp agent is in build

The JHC Sector Agent will run on your own business number, answer and qualify, book, send an M-Pesa or card link where your provider supports it, log the chat and hand over to staff. It is not on sale, and we have set no price or date. Meanwhile, see what a set-up looks like for SACCOs or Nairobi property firms, or compare chatbot costs in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

How much is a chatbot in Kenya?

A basic FAQ bot is often quoted at KES 15,000 to 30,000 and one that takes M-Pesa at KES 40,000 to 80,000, plus monthly hosting and Meta's message fees. Our quoted options start from £395 (about $520).

What is the AI chatbot price in Kenya shillings each month?

Budget a few thousand shillings for hosting and upkeep of a simple bot, more for a platform subscription, plus Meta's per-message charges and any AI tool fees. Volume is the biggest variable.

Is the WhatsApp Business API still free for replies in Kenya?

Kenyan press reported in 2026 that replies would be charged from 1 October, but Meta's own pricing updates page, checked in October 2026, still said non-template messages are free. Template messages are charged. The free WhatsApp Business app is not affected.

Can a chatbot take M-Pesa payments?

Yes, through Safaricom's Daraja API and your own paybill or till. The bot sends the prompt; your system should confirm the payment before anything is released.

Nairobi developers quote less. Why use a UK firm?

Often a local developer is the right choice. We suit firms that want the set-up in their own accounts, a fixed quoted price, written documentation and data transfers recorded under ODPC guidance.
