WhatsApp chatbot cost in South Africa: an honest guide

A WhatsApp chatbot cost in South Africa has three parts: a one-off build, a monthly platform subscription, and Meta's fees per template message. Published local prices are scarce. Platform plans start at a few hundred rand a month, builds are usually quoted privately, and Meta's fees depend on the type of message. Below is what each part pays for, and what we charge.

WhatsApp chatbot cost in South Africa: the short answer

We looked for South African price lists in October 2026 and found very few. Most local agencies say "contact us for a quote". One international provider's South Africa pricing page lists a standard plan from R699 a month, with its own example bills of roughly R2,500 a month for a small brand and R10,000 for a mid-size one, Meta fees included. Treat those as one vendor's illustrations, not a market rate.

So the range is wide. A simple menu bot can cost little more than the subscription; one that books, takes deposits and logs chats in a CRM is a software project and should be quoted line by line.

Many small firms don't need the paid platform at all. The free WhatsApp Business app has quick replies, a greeting message and an away message, and that covers a one-person business answering a few dozen chats a day.

What you get at each price

Typical tiers for a South African small or mid-size business. Your quotes will differ.

Tier What it usually does What you pay
Free WhatsApp Business app Greeting, away message, quick replies and labels, typed by staff Nothing beyond data
Self-serve platform, built yourself Menu buttons and FAQ answers on the Business Platform, little or no AI A monthly plan (one provider lists from R699) plus Meta template fees
Agency-built bot AI answers from your documents, lead questions, handover to a person A build fee quoted by the agency, plus the platform and Meta fees
Integrated assistant All of the above plus calendar, CRM and payment links through PayFast, Yoco or Ozow A larger build quote, plus monthly running costs and maintenance

What drives the build price

  • How many conversations it handles"What are your hours" is one flow. Quotes, bookings, order tracking and complaints are four more, each needing testing.
  • What it connects toReading a Google Sheet is quick. Writing into a CRM, a booking system or an accounting package takes longer and can break when that software updates.
  • PaymentsSending a Yoco, PayFast or Ozow link is straightforward if your account already supports payment links. Checking the payment landed and updating the order is extra work.
  • Handover to a personA good bot knows when to stop and alert staff, with the chat history attached. Building that well takes time.
  • TestingReal customers ask odd questions. Budget for a week of watching transcripts and fixing answers after launch.

WhatsApp Business API cost in South Africa: Meta's fees

Since 1 July 2025 Meta has charged per delivered template message on the WhatsApp Business Platform, with rates set by message type (marketing, utility, authentication) and the recipient's country. Its pricing page says ordinary replies sent within 24 hours of a customer's last message are free, and so are utility templates sent inside that window.

Here the sources conflict. Briefly News reported in August 2026, citing MyBroadband, that South African businesses would start paying for service replies from 1 October 2026. When we checked Meta's own page in October 2026, its list of October 2026 changes did not name South Africa. Before you budget, ask your provider for the current South African rate card in writing and check it against Meta's page.

Costs that appear after launch

Markup on Meta fees

Some providers resell Meta's messages at a margin. Ask whether the per-message price you're quoted is Meta's rate or theirs.

Lock-in

If the bot lives in an agency's account, you may lose your flows, chat history and even the number when you leave. Insist on your own Meta business account.

Nobody looking after it

Prices change, staff leave, a new product launches. A bot nobody updates starts giving wrong answers within months.

Red flags when you're buying

  • "Unlimited messages" for a flat feeMeta charges for templates, so somebody pays. Find out who, and what happens at high volume.
  • No mention of opt-inWhatsApp's own rules and POPIA section 69 both require consent before marketing messages. A seller who skips this is putting your number at risk.
  • No written handover planYou need to know what happens when the bot can't answer, and who sees the alert.

Questions people ask

How much does a chatbot cost in Johannesburg?

Prices aren't city-specific. Expect a build fee quoted by the agency, a monthly platform plan from a few hundred rand, and Meta's template fees on top.

What is a typical AI chatbot price in rand?

There's no reliable published average. Get at least two written quotes that separate the build, the platform subscription and Meta's message fees.

Will Meta charge for customer service replies from October 2026?

South African press reports say so, but Meta's own pricing page didn't list South Africa among its October 2026 changes when we checked. Ask your provider for the current rate card.

Can a UK company build our WhatsApp bot?

Yes, by video, inside your own Meta and business accounts. Under POPIA section 72 we agree the basis for any access from the UK in writing first.

Can the bot take payment?

It can send a payment link from your PayFast, Yoco or Ozow account. The payment itself happens on the provider's page, not in the chat.
