AI lessons and AI help for businesses in Margate
Margate's revival has been built on art and visitors: Turner Contemporary has welcomed around five million visitors since it opened in 2011, and the £22.2 million Town Deal (awarded 2021) backs creative production and skills, among other things. If you're one of the town's makers, studios, galleries or guest houses, you probably do the making, the selling and the marketing yourself. I help with the last two, and I teach AI one-to-one in people's homes across Margate.
Margate, Cliftonville, Westbrook, Garlinge and Westgate-on-Sea: all in Thanet, so no travel charge.
Five AI jobs for creative and visitor businesses
- Words for what you makeDescriptions for Etsy, Shopify or your own site, drafted from your notes and then edited until they sound like you.
- Funding applicationsA first draft of a project bid, organised around the funder's questions. Check each funder's rules on AI before you start, and keep the ideas and facts your own.
- Exhibition and event copyPress releases, labels, captions and posts, with every date, price and name checked by you.
- Guest messagesWelcome notes and replies for holiday lets and B&Bs, written once and reused all season.
- The admin you put offA pile of receipts turned into a simple spreadsheet, or a tangled email thread turned into three clear actions.
AI and creative work: where UK law stands
If you make art for a living, you may have mixed feelings about AI, so it helps to know the current position. In March 2026 the government published its report on copyright and AI. It dropped its earlier preferred plan for a broad copyright exception with an opt-out for AI training, and said it would gather more evidence before changing the law. The report also says AI-assisted work with real human creative input, such as a photo you've edited with an AI tool, can get ordinary copyright protection.
There's no legal duty in the UK to label AI-generated content, but being open with buyers is sensible. I'm not a lawyer, so take professional advice on anything specific.
If you sell online, the guide for shops and online sellers goes further. Arts and community groups may find AI for charities and community groups more useful.
Free help at Margate Library
On the fourth Thursday of each month, 2pm to 4pm, Margate Library (in the Thanet Gateway Plus building on Cecil Street) hosts a free Digital Hub. It's a good first stop if you need to get online or set up an email account. Once that's sorted, a lesson picks up where the volunteers leave off.

For anyone who wants more from AI, whatever you'd use it for. I don't ask for passwords or bank details, family are welcome, and there's no sales pitch.

Online lessonsQuestions from Margate
Can AI help me write a funding application?
It can turn your notes into a structured first draft and tighten the wording. Some funders set rules on AI use, so read their guidance first, and make sure every claim and figure is yours.
Can I use AI to improve my product photos?
Yes, within limits. Tidying a background or the lighting is fine; changing how the item itself looks risks misleading buyers. We'll go through where the line sits.
Is there a business network in Margate?
Margate has had a Town Deal Board to steer the Town Deal projects. I haven't found a Business Improvement District or an active chamber for the town, so the county-wide Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce is the nearest option.
Do you cover Cliftonville and Westgate-on-Sea?
Yes. All of Thanet is inside my no-travel-charge area, including Cliftonville, Westgate-on-Sea and Birchington.

Who you'll work with
James Hayes Consulting is led by Ross Hayes, who builds software for his own businesses and uses AI tools in them every day. We set AI up on your real work, explain it in plain English, and tell you straight if something isn’t worth paying for.
Every project starts with a free 15-minute call, and prices are agreed in writing before you commit.
